SPAN 5200 - Spanish-English Translation



Goals: To learn how theories, especially about culture, frame the way a translator or interpreter renders a text and reflect on how these influences condition your own approach to translation; to improve your knowledge of the grammar, vocabulary and semantics of English and Spanish; to learn about employment as a translator or interpreter; and to complete your own significant, independent Spanish/English translation project for the Hamline Plan Q.

Content: Most learning in this course takes place through the following three means: 1. Textbook lessons and in-class peer review of homework translation exercises; 2. Learning about translation through classes dedicated to contemporary news stories about words, culture and meaning; to visits from local translators and interpreters; and to presentations about translation history and theory; 3. Your independent translation project. Each student will do short and longer oral presentations in Spanish about their translation project. The translation project includes a reflective essay and a bibliography.

Prerequisite: Advanced level of Spanish (SPAN 3350, 3900, a 5000-level course, or study abroad in Spanish are recommended)
