History Major

Major Program

The ideal time for students to declare the major in history is the sophomore year. Then students can, in proper time, take courses which are essentially designed for specific academic years: Introductory courses for first-year students and sophomores; 3000-level courses for sophomores, juniors, and seniors; and a 5000-level course for seniors. Students, however, may enter the department at any time, as long as the department’s requirements can be satisfactorily completed.

Since history is an integrative discipline, students are encouraged to select, in consultation with their advisors, courses in foreign languages, social sciences, literature, fine arts, or natural sciences, depending on their personal and career interests.

Major Requirements

A major in history consists of a minimum of 40 credits (10 classes):

  • Three 1000-level courses
  • Five courses numbered above 3010
  • One course numbered above 5000
