EDU 5400 - Teaching Social Studies in the Elementary School K-8



Goals: To develop an understanding of the social studies and the purposes they serve, especially citizenship education. To learn about materials development and teaching techniques used in facilitating learning of social studies skills and content by elementary and middle students. Issues in social studies such as its role in the school curriculum, standards and testing, curriculum development, and content controversies will be explored.

Content: Philosophy of social studies education; methods of teaching; major concepts of the social science disciplines; planning for teaching; research and study skills; professional and community resources; incorporation of national, state and local standards; citizenship education in global perspective; a middle school focus is included; school-based teaching activities.
Taught: Annually, fall term.
Prerequisites: EDU 3150, 3250, and admission to teacher education.

Clinical Requirement: 15 hours.
