Education Minor (With Teaching License)

Admission to Teacher Education

A student must satisfy the following criteria to be admitted to teacher education:

  1. Satisfactory completion of EDU 3150: Schools and Society and EDU 3250: Educational Psychology with an average grade point of 2.50 or above
  2. Cumulative GPA of 2.50 at time of application to the Teacher Education Program
  3. Completion of the Praxis I Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) and
  4. Approval of the education faculty

A student whose application for admission is denied may either reapply when all criteria are satisfactorily met or petition the faculty of the education department to reconsider their decision. If admission is again denied, the student has the right to appeal to the School of Education Academic Affairs Committee.

Admission to Student Teaching

Application for admission to student teaching must be made at the beginning of the term preceding student teaching. Students should complete the application process during a student teaching intake meeting as scheduled by the education department.

Applicants must satisfy the following criteria:

  1. Admission to teacher education
  2. Senior standing at the time of student teaching
  3. Recommendation from the student’s major department
  4. Completion of major (5-12, 9-12, and K-12 candidates), completion of major and specialty area (K-6 and 5-8 specialty) and completion of all education coursework
  5. Major GPA and education course GPA of 3.0 or above
  6. Specialty area GPA of 3.0 or above and
  7. Approval of the education faculty

Grade Policies

No course in which the grade received is less than C- may be used to meet any licensure requirement. Student teaching courses, other than EDU 5900 (student teaching seminar), are graded pass (P), pass and not recommended for licensure (PNR), or no credit (N).

Minor Requirements


The following three lists are the general requirements for licensure in: I. Elementary Education, II. Secondary Education, and III. K-12 Education.

Additional Requirements for 5-8 Specialty


In addition to the above courses, students must complete a 5-8 specialty in one of the following five concentration areas. Please see appropriate education and content area faculty for course requirements within the specialty areas:

  1. Communication Arts and Literature
  2. French (K-8)
  3. German (K-8)
  4. Mathematics
  5. Science
  6. Social Studies
  7. Spanish (K-8)

II. General Licensure Requirements for Secondary Teaching 5-12 or 9-12


(The 9-12 option is only available for science licensure)

Secondary teaching licenses are available in the following areas: Communication Arts and Literature; Mathematics; Life Science (Biology); Chemistry; Physics; Social Studies. Required content courses for students majoring in these areas are listed in those department pages of this Bulletin. In some disciplines the special methods course(s) may be offered at another ACTC college. Students are urged to consult their education department advisor for details.

III. General Licensure Requirements for K-12 Teaching


K-12 teaching licenses are available in the following areas: Art (in collaboration with the College of St. Catherine); Music; Physical Education; Physical Education/Health; Theatre/Dance; World Languages; English as a Second Language (ESL). Required content courses for students majoring in these areas are listed in those department pages of this Bulletin. Students must consult with their major advisors and an education department advisor to determine appropriate courses and sequencing. Special methods courses for both elementary and secondary levels must be completed prior to student teaching.
