Musical Arts Major
|
|
Students in the Musical Arts Major develop strong musicianship and communication skills, engage in teamwork, practice leadership and explore their creativity. They pursue careers in performance, teaching, music therapy, film/video, music business, production and recording arts, arts management, as well as many other music and non-music professions.

Major Requirements
- Six semesters of performance studies (lessons), 3000 and/or 5000 level
- Six semesters of ensemble participation
- Eight credits of music history courses, 3000 level (*see list below)
- Eight credits of music theory courses, 3000 and/or 5000 level (**see list below)
- One 4-credit elective in music
- Senior Musical Arts Project (***see information below)
*Music History Courses at the 3000-level:
8 credits required.
Note: MUS 1030 - Music in World Cultures and Special Topics courses may be credited toward the Music History requirement upon petition of the music department faculty.
**Music Theory Courses at the 3000- or 5000-level:
8 credits required.
Note: No more than 4 credits of Composition may be credited toward the Theory requirement.
***Senior Musical Arts Project
The Senior Musical Arts Project is a creative, interdisciplinary capstone experience. Students combine their musical expertise with other areas of study to develop a project in consultation with a music adviser. A written proposal must be submitted to the music faculty prior to senior year. Examples of recent projects include: a lecture-recital on French music from the late 18th century; research into philosophy and music aesthetics which resulted in an interactive presentation of a “deep listening” experience; exploration of the phenomenon of synesthesia by a visual artist/music/religion major; and a business plan for a community music school.
