STEM Education Major (BS) - Chemistry Concentration

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: All Academic Programs

Students seeking licensure in math or in an area of science have two options for majors. The first option is to complete the full major in Applied Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Physics plus the Education Co-Major.

Another option is to complete the Bachelor of Science in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Education. This major prepares students for secondary teaching in STEM disciplines and puts them on the pathway toward earning a teaching license in Life Sciences, Mathematics, Chemistry, or Physics, and a Master of Arts in Teaching. Students majoring in STEM Education learn the core principles of the STEM fields, focusing on the exciting approaches that Natural Sciences and Mathematics take to improve lives. In this program, students gain the necessary knowledge and skills to have a positive impact on students in the classroom. The STEM Education program complements other strong and diverse offerings from the Hamline School of Education and Leadership and invites students to become a part of a supportive network of fellow students, alumni, and faculty.

A Bachelor of Science in STEM Education allows students to choose one of four concentrations: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, or Physics. To receive a teaching license in the State of MN, students will need to take three additional education courses, and complete a semester of student teaching and a student teaching seminar.

Additional Coursework Required for Licensure (STEM)

The following courses are not required for the STEM education major, but are required for teacher licensure. They may be completed as part of the bachelor’s degree, or after the bachelor’s degree is awarded.
