Legal Studies Major

Major Requirements


The legal studies major consists of forty (40) semester credits as follows:

Twenty-four (24) elective course credits


Each student selects one-, two- and four-credit courses totaling 24 credits from all LGST courses or the following interdisciplinary offerings: PHIL 3330: Social, Political, and Legal Philosophy; PSCI 3100: Constitutional Law; M&E 3600: Business Law; HIST 3400: Topics in History and the Law: Landmark Trials in American History; GPA 8061 (LGST 5100): Regulation Management.

Majors who intend to go on to law school are encouraged to develop a second major or minor in the field of their choice. Theyare further advised to seek a full-time legal studies faculty advisor. A legal studies major is not required for law school admissions. They are also advised to take PHIL 1130: Logic, as well as writing- intensive and formal reasoning courses beyond those required to meet the Hamline Plan requirements.

Majors who plan to work immediately after completing their four-year degree, are encouraged to select electives leading to the paralegal certificate or to finish a major in another discipline that offers law-related employment opportunities requiring only a bachelor’s degree such as social justice, English, foreign languages, or political science.
