The graduate programs in the College of Liberal Arts promote the ideals and values of liberal arts learning. Previously located in the Graduate School of Liberal Studies, the programs encourage meaningful dialogue and inquiry across disciplinary boundaries, enabling students to gain a deeper understanding of the human cultural heritage and the issues of contemporary life. The college offers three graduate degree options, the master of arts in liberal studies (MALS), the master of fine arts in writing (MFA), and the master of fine arts in writing for children and young adults (MFA). These degree programs are purposefully linked to each other to provide unique learning opportunities for writers and humanists. The Creative Writing Programs (CWP) in the CLA house all creative writing at the university and prepare students who wish to specialize in creative writing and to teach writing at the college level. In addition to the MFA degrees, CWP offers the bachelor of fine arts (BFA) degree.
