ANTH 3620 - Ethnography of Sound and the Environment

Content: This course will introduce students to the multifarious connections that exist at the intersection of sound studies, acoustic ecology (ecoacoustics), and ethnography. Our ultimate goal will be to examine the relationship, mediated through sound, between human beings and their environment. To do so, students will engage in close reading, listening, and other forms of sensory observation in order to understand how various sounds (of human activity, of the planet itself, and of other species) are inextricably linked to placemaking and place-sensing activities. In the end, students will use their increased understanding of sound and soundscapes to realize their own ethnographically-informed, audio-based interventions.
