Honor Societies

Alpha Kappa Delta
Founded in 1920, this national society promotes interest in the study of sociology, social research, and social service.

Alpha Psi Omega
This is one of the largest national honor societies in the United States. Membership is granted only to fully accredited institutions with a four-year curriculum in theatre and drama leading to a degree.

Beta Beta Beta
Founded in 1922, this national biology honorary society stimulates scholarship, disseminates scientific knowledge, and promotes biological research.

Brooks-Osnes Leadership Society
Founded in 2004, this Hamline honor society is named after Hamline Presidents Jabez Brooks (1854-1857) and Larry Osnes (1988-2004) and recognizes student leadership.

Iota Iota Iota
Established in 1992, Iota Iota Iota recognizes the outstanding academic achievements of students in women’s studies, and members strive to maintain the values central to women’s studies: egalitarianism, inclusiveness, and a celebration of the diversity of women’s experiences. Hamline is home to the Omicron chapter of this national honor society.

Phi Beta Kappa
Founded in 1776, this is the oldest and most prestigious national scholastic honorary society. The Zeta Chapter at Hamline looks for demonstrated excellence in a broad liberal arts education. Minimal requirements for membership include a GPA of 3.5 for seniors and 3.75 for juniors. Candidates must have completed at least three full terms or 48 semester credits at Hamline. Members must have coursework in the physical and social sciences, humanities, and the arts. In addition they are required to have training in a foreign language and in advanced mathematics (higher algebra or above) either in high school or college.

Pi Delta Phi
Founded in 1906, this national honorary French society is for students who excel in the study of the French language and literature.

Pi Gamma Mu
Founded in 1924, this national social science honor society is for students who demonstrate outstanding scholarship in the social sciences.

Presidential Fellows
Founded in 1977, this Hamline honor society recognizes outstanding transfer students for scholarship and leadership and provides special seminars.

Presidential Scholars
Founded in 1970, this Hamline honor society recognizes outstanding first-year students for scholarship and leadership and provides seminars throughout their four years.

Psi Chi
Founded in 1929, this national honor society for psychology encourages, stimulates, and maintains superior scholarship among its members and advances the science of psychology.

Sigma Delta Pi
Founded in 1919, this national honor society includes students who excel in speaking Spanish and appreciate the Spanish culture and literature.

Torch and Cycle
Founded in 1917, this Hamline honor society inducts juniors and seniors based on leadership and scholarship.

Academic Awards

Special prizes, given in recognition of special achievement and merit, are conferred each spring, along with some endowed scholarships listed on previous pages.

Academic Excellence Award-To a second-year female athlete who has the highest GPA of all second-year female athletes.

American Chemical Society Affiliate Award-To a chemistry student, based upon achievement and improvement.

American Institute of Chemists Award-To a chemistry student, based upon leadership, scholastic standing, and potential for advancement in the field.

The Monroe Bell Prize in Biblical Scholarship-For outstanding work in biblical scholarship. Established by the Reverend Monroe Bell, a United Methodist, class of 1953.

Beta Beta Beta Outstanding First-Year Student Award-To a first-year biology major who excels in biology coursework.

Beta Beta Beta Outstanding Achievement Award-To a senior Tri Beta member who has undertaken significant research.

Thomas P. Beyer Prize-To a junior or senior English major with an excellent scholastic record, who has demonstrated ability in creative writing.

Biblical Studies Award-To an outstanding student in the department of religion.

Allan T. H. Bluhm Memorial Award-Provides a trophy and award for a junior class student who has demonstrated exceptional qualities of scholarship, leadership, honor, sincerity, and service.

Dr. Kent H. Bracewell Award-To the senior athlete with the highest grade point average.

George Bridgman Poetry Prize-Given to the winner of a poetry competition.

Belle and Leland Cooper Award in Anthropology-To the outstanding senior majoring in anthropology.

The Karl Van D’Elden Prize-Best undergraduate research paper in modern languages.

Eliza A. Drew Prizes-Annual prizes in art, communications, French, German, Spanish, history, legal studies, management and economics, music composition, political science, and secondary education.

The Bernard Fangl Award in German Studies-This award was established by Dr. Kari Fangel, class of 1992, German instructor and director of off-campus programs at Hamline, in memory of her Austrian grandfather, Bernard Fangl. The prize is awarded to an outstanding German studies student with an interest in international affairs.

First-Year Mathematics Achievement Award-To the student who has the best record in first-year mathematics.

First-Year Physics Award-To an outstanding first-year physics student.

The Goethe Institute Awards-To students for cultural curiosity and awareness; to students for academic distinction in German.

Betty R. Green Memorial Award-To outstanding students in sociology and anthropology.

Burton and Ruth Grimes Teacher Award in Memory and Honor of Gordon B. Sanders-To the outstanding teacher of the faculty of the College of Liberal Arts.

Walter Alexander Kenyon Award-To the senior biology student who has an excellent scholastic record and shows promise of contributing to biological and/or medical science through work toward an advanced degree.

Mark E. Kispert Memorial Prize-To a philosophy major who has written an outstanding essay.

Mary Maude Knox Memorial Award For Academic Excellence-To a first-year or sophomore student who shows unusual scholastic promise.

Management Alumni Award-To a student for completing an outstanding Management/Economics internship.

Faith L. Murray Psychology Prize-Established by Dan Loritz, class of 1969 and Hamline vice president of University Relations, in memory of his aunt, who enabled him to attend Hamline. It is awarded to an outstanding student in the psychology department.

Elizabeth Lueben Norton Prize in Chemistry-To a junior chemistry major who shows exceptional promise.

Claribelle B. Olson Memorial Award-To a sophomore woman who embodies the qualities of scholarship, leadership, and service.

The Parsons Endowed Prize in Education-Awarded to a promising upperclass student in education with preference to a student majoring in English. Established in honor of Frederick A. and Margaret C. Parsons.

Alumni Award in Physics-To an upperclass physics major who has demonstrated strong academic abilities.

Pre-Seminary Award-This award is given to the outstanding senior religion major planning to attend a theological seminary to be trained for some aspect of the ministry of the church.

E. W. Randall Prizes in Oratory-Awarded for excellence in oral presentation.

Raygor Award-To an elementary education student who is regarded by his/her peers as having contributed significantly to the department.

James Thatcher Ritchie, Jr. Memorial Award-To a junior or senior student majoring in English, for academic excellence.

Amy B. Russell Memorial Award-To a student in the social science division who, with financial assistance, can participate more completely in the Hamline community.

Jonathan Sautner Memorial Award-To outstanding students in the Natural Science Division.

Senior Pre-Seminary Award-To a senior student in the Department of Religion who plans to continue education in a theological seminary.

Senior Religion Major Award-To an outstanding senior student in the Department of Religion.

Alfred D. and Hazel Stedman Awards in Writing-To students for reports, reviews, critiques, or essays written in connection with regular courses in the undergraduate curriculum.

Ruth Sullivan Award-To a junior biology student recommended by the biology faculty.

Donald E. Swanson Award-To a junior psychology major who demonstrates exceptional academic achievement.

Hamline Theatre Acting Award-Annual awards given in recognition of excellence in the performance of a principal role in a production of the Hamline University Theatre.

Hamline Theatre Scholarship-To a deserving theatre major based on merit and achievement.

The Arturo Tienken Endowed Prize-Established by Professor Barbara Younoszai in memory of Professor Emeritus Arturo Tienken. Awarded to an outstanding student(s) in Spanish.

Leadership and Service Awards

Bob and Shirley Bogue Scholarship-Awarded to students who have an interest in journalism. Preference is given to students who intend to pursue a career in journalism and/or who have worked on the Oracle or other campus publications.

William G. Cloon Award-To a senior male scholar and athlete, and to a senior female scholar and athlete.

The Corner-Rose Scholarship-To one or more female students who undertake an internship in a career outside traditional women’s fields.

Earl E. Craven Award-To a student or students who are staff members of campus publications and who have contributed the most toward raising the standards of campus journalism.

Alison Durfey Award-To the student who has significantly been involved in taking action regarding issues of hunger and homelessness.

Faculty and Staff Members of the Year Awards-To one faculty member and one staff member of the Hamline community who have exemplified outstanding dedication, commitment, and service to the Hamline community and to our goals and objectives.

Hamline Human Relations Awards-To students who have contributed to understanding among people who differ in race, gender and nationality.

Steven P. Lindgren Award-To a senior male athlete who possesses athletic ability and outstanding scholarship, leadership and character.

Multicultural and International Student Association (MISA) Awards-This organization’s end-of-year awards include the Barbara Simmons “Eagle” Award and others for scholarship, leadership and service to first-year, intermediate, and senior students.

Outstanding Student Employees-To the best student employees in all four years.

Outstanding Junior Woman Athlete Award-To a junior woman athlete who has earned a medal for three consecutive years in at least one sport and has demonstrated exceptional personal contribution to the women’s athletics program.

Outstanding Senior Athlete Award-To a senior woman athlete with outstanding athletic ability in at least one sport and who has made a personal contribution to Hamline University women’s athletics.

Samuel Louis Parish Award for Religious Leadership-To the student who has contributed most effectively during the year in the area of religious leadership on campus.

Pat Paterson Award-To a senior woman who has been an outstanding participant in athletics all her years at Hamline, exhibits outstanding personal qualities, and has contributed to the total women’s athletic program.

Bill Peterson Prize in Journalism-To a member of the Oracle staff who exemplifies graceful writing and high journalistic standards.

Rookie of the Year Award-To a first-year female athlete who has a GPA in the top five percent of all first-year female athletes, and who has earned a varsity letter on at least one team.
